Q:
How do I make my wedding makeup last—while still looking fresh and not cakey?

Welcome to back to wedding season, the "Ask Gucci" edition!

Today, the
best tricks for wedding makeup that lasts (without looking cakey) are fresh on Gucci’s mind: “I got married in July in France—it was so hot!” she recalls. Here is her guide to makeup that flawlessly stays the course, from dinner and dancing to your first 'we're married' face-plant.  Plus, what to pack for easy touch-ups!

FOCUS ON SKIN

"The trick to longevity is in the base layer,” says Gucci of investing in good brushes, using a light-but-meticulous hand,  and spending the most time possible on areas that need more a little more coverage. Once foundation is in place, you can go easy on the highlighter. “I would avoid adding too much additional radiance,” she warns, since products that contain even subtle shimmer can become hard to control under heat, warm lighting, or camera flash. A tiny bit of Super Loaded Tinted Highlight  high on cheekbones, or dab of Lit Up stick on the inner corners of the eyes and cupid's bow, is all that's needed.

SET YOUR MAKEUP

Once foundation is in place, “the most important thing is to set your makeup,” says Gucci, who likes a lighter-than-air formula like Vital Pressed Skincare Powder, which sweeps away unwanted shine and boosts the wear of makeup  while maintaining a hydrated glow with active skincare ingredients. “It’s also really important to layer," she says, suggesting a swirl of powder on lids before applying Eye Pods cream-to-powder shadows so they have “something to grab onto."  Be sure you have your powder on hand for touch-ups throughout the night. If you need a little more warmth, a dusting of Beauty Butter Powder Bronzer is an alternative to set makeup on the cheeks and forehead. "It feels like your skin—not too radiant, not too matte, just perfect.”

MAKE LIP COLOR LAST

A lip color that's close to your own, but with a little boost, is a pretty option that requires minimal touch-ups. Gucci likes to press on the Dusty Rose shade of
Lip Suede Les Rouges for long-lasting color and moisture—its high concentrations of marula and cherry oil keeps pigment from clinging to dry spots on the lips and create a more even application.  If a lush bright red is your everyday, the palette's vibrant Tomato shade does trick and wears down to a hydrated stain. She recommends popping the compact, or any favorite lipstick,  into a small 'day of' bag. Now smile, it's your wedding day.
