"Each December, I look forward to getting creative with my holiday wrapping," says Gucci, who is settling into the season by decorating, baking, and plotting her favorite gifts for friends and family. "But last year, I realized it was time to shift old habits by swapping out anything single-use for recyclable, reusable, and biodegradable alternatives."
Before getting started, consider that according to the American Forest & Paper Association, any paper that is texturized or contains non-recyclable additives like laminate, plastic, or glitter can contaminate your recycling bin. The good news is that innovative small brands like Wrappily or Flower Seed Paper are no sacrifice on stylish and sustainable alternatives. The former prints their whimsical reversible patterns onto newsprint (that can be recycled up to 7 times!), while the latter embeds wildflower seeds into their paper, gift tags, and twine. "You can plant this after opening for wildflowers in the spring!" says Gucci.
Another wrapping don't? Regular tape. Here, Gucci uses a paper gum type that's a 100% compostable choice—and strong enough to hold its own against its traditional counterparts. A quick way to add colorful touches to recyclable plain kraft brown paper is by using novelty stamps—Gucci grabbed a few from Casey Rubber Stamps in the East Village and pads of plant-based ink. The finishing touch on the wrapped Shanghai Edition for her mom, Mary Lou, whose love of red lips is legendary? Sprigs of eucalyptus, fresh berries from her backyard, and a festive cinnamon stick.
