When Phoebe Tonkin sat down for episode 6 of “Makeup & Friends,” it was instantly clear that the actress—who recently joined HBO's Westworld cast for Season 3 to the delight of her 5.5 million Instagram followers—has been holding out on some epic skincare secrets.“[The Australian] approach to beauty is very internal,” says Tonkin, who, dressed in boyfriend jeans and a printed top by the Ozzie label, Matteau, is both gamine and eye crossingly radiant. In place of aggressive topical treatments, she focuses on effortless beauty basics and the kind of moderation that lets skin function at its best. That means keeping things "healthy, clean, and hydrated” and incorporating nutritional supplements like Vitamin Cmagnesium, or Sakara’s travel-friendly chlorophyll drops for support from within.

Scroll through her Instagram feed, and Tonkin is often captured barefaced by the surfall freckles and Sydney sunshine. No surprise then that the actress, who grew up swimming daily at Balmoral Beach, makes time to crusade for the environment, whether by successfully lobbying the California Congress to ban chlorpyrifos, a neurotoxic pesticide, or encouraging her devoted followers to support campaigns that protect marine life.

And yet Tonkin, who rose to stateside fame on The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff series, The Originals, also celebrated her 30th birthday this past fall—and with it, she says, she adopted at least one significant new beauty ritual. "I do make a point of putting something on in the morning [now]," she says of incorporating a few key no makeup-makeup bag staples: Chanel lip balm and Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundationwhich she applies with a DIY trick that’s dubbed—what else?—“the Gucci.” Watch the full episode now!
