Since launching our first true lipstick—Lip Suede Matte Lipstick—one question tops the Instagram comments list: 'How do I best prep my lips for color?’ Being a pro makeup artist for over 25 years, Gucci recommends a few application tips she's learned from the world’s most beautiful faces (hello, Gisele Bundchen!) and years spent collaborating on set. From gentle exfoliation to choosing the right lip liner, today's tutorial is all about perfecting the lipstick look!

Tip 1: Hydrate + Exfoliate Lips

"To help lips not feel bone dry or too glossy," Gucci first applies a touch of clear or neutral tinted balm, then follows by gently rubbing a warm, damp washcloth over the lips to exfoliate. Learned from supermodel Gisele Bündchen, Gucci says the quick tip boosts any lipstick's wear. Starting with a smooth, even surface is an especially crucial prep for bright or superpigmented shades.

Tip 2: Choose a Neutral Liner

When choosing a lip liner shade, Gucci suggests a nude shade that matches your own natural lip color. "That way you can control the shape and blend in color seamlessly with no harsh, visible lines," she notes while demonstrating with a lab sample she's been working on. Certain scenarios may call for a matching a deeper liner to your lipstick (like rich plum Lou Lou, used on Anne Hathaway) but as a general rule: "Flexibility with a neutral is the way to go!"

Tip 3: Correct with Foundation

Make a mistake during application? No stress. "I use my Spot Check Brush alongside Vital Skin Foundation to clean up the corners or edges," says Gucci, who is careful to blend away any traces of excess foundation. "This technique ultimately ensures your lipstick looks as refined as possible."
